LAFAYETTE COUNTY HISTORICAL AND GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY

WELCOME TO OXFORD, MISSISSIPPI

Oxford Square at night

Are you ready to begin your research about Lafayette County history or your family's genealogy roots here? We're ready to help! We've got a great collection of historical and genealogy material that started when the Lafayette County Historical and Genealogical Society was founded in 1967 as the Skipwith Society. We've grown over the years since then and now offer our volunteer help online or in person in the Genealogy Room we maintain at the Lafayette County and Oxford Public Library at 401 Bramlett Blvd. in Oxford, Mississippi. Our mailing address is PO Box 1382, Oxford, MS 38655.

Everyone is welcome at our meetings and whether you're an experienced family history researcher, you're just starting to think about where you came from, or you're interested in some of our great local history, our Quarterly meetings are a good place to learn more about Lafayette County, MS. Our next meeting will be held here in Oxford at 2:30 on Sunday, April 21, 2024 (postponed from 1/21) in the Genealogy Room at the library when we'll have a presentation on Lafayette Co, MS history or genealogy.  Check the EVENTS tab above to see more details for this meeting and to see summaries of past meetings.

In addition, we're working to get more of our resources available online. We've just added an Index to Enslaved Persons mentioned in Probate Cases in early Lafayette County to our Resources tab.  If you don't see what you're looking for here now, check back as we update our website. We also have several publications available that are unique to Lafayette County. Check them out at PUBLICATIONS. All our work is done with volunteers who are members of the Society. If you like what you see here, please consider attending one of regular meetings or joining as a remote member to support our activities. Dues are $20 per calendar year payable in January. Checks, along with a MEMBERSHIP form available above, may be sent to our secretary, Frank Walker, at the address shown. Members receive an informative newsletter every quarter. We are non-profit, charitable educational organization, so your donations are tax deductible depending on your personal financial situation.
